What Is Sharpening?

Sharpening is the active side of Tempreon's learning system. While Tempering works passively in the background, Sharpening asks you direct questions to resolve ambiguity and fill gaps in what the system knows about you.

Think of it as the difference between watching someone work for a month versus having a 5-minute conversation. Both produce learning, but the conversation is dramatically faster.

Sharpening Questions

These are specific questions generated by the learning system based on patterns it can't quite resolve from observation alone:

• "You've used both bullet points and numbered lists in recommendations. Do you choose based on content type, audience, or something else?"
• "When drafting emails to clients, you sometimes include detailed context and sometimes keep it brief. What determines the level of detail?"
• "You've mentioned 'keeping it simple' but also 'being thorough.' How do you balance these when they conflict?"

Each question targets a real ambiguity the system has identified.

Answering Questions

For each question, you can:

• Answer it — Type your response. Even a sentence or two dramatically improves the relevant Instinct's accuracy.
• Skip it — Defer the question for later. It'll be surfaced again when relevant.

Your answers are processed by the learning system and directly inform your Instincts. A single clear answer can be worth dozens of passive observations.

Focus Areas

Focus Areas are system-identified learning gaps — topics where Tempreon knows it needs more data. They appear below your Sharpening Questions with:

• Description — What the system wants to understand better
• Priority — How important this gap is to your overall intelligence
• Hit count — How many times this area has come up
• Expiration — Focus Areas expire if not relevant after a period

Focus Areas guide the Tempering system to pay extra attention to certain patterns in your sessions.

You don't need to wait for the dashboard — Sharpening happens naturally in conversation too:

• "What questions does Tempreon have about how I work?" — Surface pending Sharpening Questions
• "I should clarify — when I say 'keep it brief,' I mean under 200 words for internal docs, but I'm fine with length for client deliverables" — Proactively resolve ambiguity
• "What areas of my work style does Tempreon still need to learn?" — Surface Focus Areas

Best Practices

Answer honestly, not aspirationally

If you tend to procrastinate on certain tasks, say so. The system is more helpful when it knows your real patterns, not your ideal ones.

Provide context for "it depends" answers

Many questions don't have a single right answer. That's fine — explain the conditions. "I'm formal with new clients but casual after the third meeting" is exactly the kind of nuance that makes Instincts powerful.

Check in periodically

Spending 5 minutes answering Sharpening Questions once a week can accelerate your Forge Journey significantly. It's the highest-ROI activity for improving your AI.
